Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) is a 3D Fantasy MMORPG set in a world of adventure like no other: J.R.R Tolkien’s Middle Earth. You’ll create a character, complete quests, craft items and weapons; explore dangerous dungeons and environments in much the same way as many other MMORPGs, though with one key difference; you’ll do it in all in Middle Earth, as Frodo makes his journey to Mount Doom to destroy the one ring. 

Locations ranging from the white city of Minis Tirith to the dark corners of Moria are commonplace in LOTRO. It’s a world first designed almost a century ago in the mind of J.R.R Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings; and again more recently by Peter Jackson in the movie Trilogy by the same name. This time, its Turbine, the illustrious video game studio behind Dungeons and Dragons Online, and it might just be the best recreation yet.

You’ll begin, like many an MMORPG, by creating your first character. There are 4 options for race; the Human, Dwarf, Elf and Hobbit, and 9 choices for class; the Champion, Guardian, Hunter, Minstrel, Captain, Burglar, Warden, Lore-Master and Rune-Keeper. You’ll then be transported to you race-specific starting area, and begin a series of Intro Quests that serve two very specific functions: first, to introduce you to LOTRO’s game mechanics, and second, to introduce you to the world of Middle Earth, the characters that inhabit it, the rich story that surrounds it, and your place in the centre.

It’s important to note that LOTRO is an extremely high-quality MMORPG; up until recently it required that you purchase a copy of the game from your local game store, and time-cards each month to allow you to play. Today, it is Free-to-Play. You can create your character and enjoy levels 1-40 of LOTRO completely free of charge; however, should you wish to continue further, you’ll be required to begin spending some money.

What you can choose to purchase in LOTRO contains as much diversity as the game itself; you can purchase scrolls that offer you additional XP for pre-determined periods of time, or you could buy an adventure pack that gives you access to hundreds on new quests and the ability to level from 41-50, and higher. Even some classes, such as the Lore-Master and Rune-Keep require purchase before they can be used, and although this may not sound as appealing as a completely free-to-play MMORPG, it should only take you a few minutes to realise why it’s better.

Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) is quite possibly the most accomplished MMORPG on the market today, and you can access more than half of the content for free. If you should decide that you like it, and that you want to play even more, only then are you asked to pay. And for many people who simply wish to explore a new world, they may never need to spend more than the 250 LOTRO Coins given to them for free when they make a new character. For others who wish to see more of the amazing world of LOTRO, or wish to play a new class, or craft new recipes or buy new items of equipment, that choice is available, too. Verdict? It offers it all, and in doing so, offers one of the most liberal, beautiful and enjoyable MMORPG experiences on the market today.
