Review
Mini Ninja is a 2D, Browser MMORPG that features characters from popular anime series' Bleach and Naruto, allowing players to battle against each other using their favourite anime characters in 'never-before-seen' scenarios.
Additionally, as Mini Ninja is accessible through your Internet browser, it can be played without downloading or installing any third-party programs, so you can begin playing in less than a minute!
There's a lot to love about Mini Ninja; it's Browser-Based, so you can play it at work or school without any hassles; it's jam-packed with characters from both Naruto and Bleach, with regular appearances from Sasuke, Itchigo, Gaara and more; it's cute and cuddly, utilizing visuals from the popular anime style 'chibi', and it's jam-packed with battles, quests, items and upgrades. Everything a growing boy or girl needs to survive Math class.
But it's not all peaches and cream; while so many of the elements that make Mini Ninja a standout Browser MMORPG are as God intended, there are others that fall short, and have left some players less than amused. Two of these design flaws stand out from the pack.
The first is the inability to move your character on the world map. Mini Ninja utilizes a 'point-and-click-adventure' design which, while often a standout choice in many MMOs, draws from the 'essence' of fighting titles like Naruto and Bleach, and leaves a less than pleasant taste in the mouth in the beginning stages of play. Fortunately, this feeling is short-lived, and after only a few minutes playing the tutorial will have you up to speed with the hundreds of choices available to you in this mode, and should have you well on your way to becoming an ultimate ninja.
The second are the combat mechanics. While you're given the choice of character, equipment, weapons, armour, skills and many more, the combat is automated, and offers no interactive elements at all. Additionally, there are no sound effects during combat, making this particular design choice one of the most hilariously 'fail' in gaming history. Sometimes I really do have to wonder: are they employing people to make games now, or have they started using monkeys? I guess we'll never know.
On the bright side, watching these battles take place are often a lot of fun, and as Mini Ninja has been specifically designed to be played in short bursts, they make for a fantastic way to 'alt-tab' your way through work and school, while still progressing through the world and advancing your character.
While Mini Ninja is a far-cry from what players were expecting to see with its release, overcoming these objections is the secret to success, as hundreds of skills, weapons and upgrades await those willing to give it a chance. Oh, and most importantly, the characters are from Naruto and Bleach, and you can watch them fight all day! Anime-lovers: your prayers have been answered.
