Review
Pirates of the Caribbean was quick to download and install, which led me to believe it was going to be an ugly game, but I was pleasantly surprised. The graphics
won't blow you away but they are nice and fit the theme very well. Creating your character in a typical MMO (especially a free one) usually takes a few seconds, you pick
your hair and skin color and off you go. In Pirates of the Caribbean Online, you are given multiple options on everything from cheek width, nose arc, to whether or not you
want a belt or a hat. If you take your time with it, your character's appearance can be molded to perfection. The game is no Perfect World when it comes to character
customization, but it still has quite a bit of character creation options.
You begin the game in a prison where Jack Sparrow rescues you. You are instructed on how to proceed via a mix of on screen tips and cut scenes that have remarkably great voice acting. The first hour or so of the game is played like this, you'll have almost no interaction with other players as you meet the main characters from the movie one by one and learn the game. The combat is simple but entertaining, it's a real time system where you'll have to time your mouse clicks rather than just button mash. Your skill with individual weapons increases as you use them, which I find a better progression ladder than the typical â'level up and pick skills system that most games use.
Pirates offers an interesting PvP system. You are prohibited to fight other pirates (players) but this rule only applies to living pirates, as you can put on a ring which turns you into an undead pirate, and as long as you leave it on you may attack or be attacked by other undead pirates. If Pirates sounds like the perfect free MMO, you'll be disappointed to hear that there's one major catch. The free play, or basic account, is very limited. You'll be denied access to the best ships and equipment, and even to additional skill slots! Unfortunately, the free play aspects of this game are more of a trial than a stand alone game. This doesn't mean you should pass Pirates of the Caribbean Online up, its worth the download!
