Project Torque

Review

Project Torque is the mother of all racing MMOs, at least in the realistic racing MMO genre. The graphics are simply stunning, and the scenery looks great. Project Torque is one of the only real RACING MMOs out there that has No boosts, rockets, flying cars or anything crazy. The developers definitely put a lot of detail into the background and inside the cars. You can see your driver turn the steering wheel, change gears and everything else. The game's multiple camera modes also adds a lot of functionality and additional layers of game play to this already exciting game.

Another interesting part of Project Torque is the fact that you can actually configure your car to use manual transmission, which adds an entirely new challenge to the game. Automatic transmission is of course easier, but if used properly, Manual Transmission can actually give you better speed and acceleration. The game also feels very functional and responsive. Game play is smooth and requires a lot of skill, as if you fall behind, you can't rely on items to help you. The better player will win.

The only major drawback to Project Torque is the game's limited customization and items available for purchase at the store. One other small complaint against Project Torque is the small population. It may take a good 5 minutes or so of waiting in the lobby at times before you can actually start the game. The game's still fairly new, so, hopefully Aeriagames will add new parts and customizations. If you like racing games, this is definitely one of the best ones out there if you're looking for a realistic game. If you're looking for something a bit more crazy, I'd recommend Upshift Strikeracer or Drift City.

What started out as a very good Racing MMORPG has now become an arcadish ripoff. Thanks to Gamigo (the German distributor) and Invictus (developer) Project Torque/ Level R is merely a ghost of the promising game it once was. In Q2 of 2009 Gamigo released a new build of Level R, which was rejected by Aeria (US distributor), of the game and in doing so Gamigo lost a lot of players to Project Torque. That new build was not what the players wanted and a ot of them sought refuge in PT. In their quest to get those players back Gamigo forced Invictus to implement an IP block on PT in Q4 of 2009. It was a limited succes, because a lot of players found ways to keep on playing PT. In Q2 of 2010 Invictus went one step further (again under pressure from Gamigo) and blocked the main tool for playing PT ---> HotSpot Shield. Meanwhile Gamigo has released another new build from Level R and this time it is even worse. The build has a lot of bugs and the new cars are not driving how they are supposed to drive. Aeria is still refusing to release any new build, because it has taken a direction that is not what Aeria or the players want. Time will tell what eventually is going to happen the the Level R/ Project Torque franchise, but fact is Invictus cant go back from where they are now.
