Unlike many other MMORTS games, WarStory is completely unique in both gameplay and design. Battles take place in real time allowing you to control your units manually and plan your attacks carefully, and by utilizing a fantastic art style and high-quality graphics, offers a complete real-time strategy experience without the need to download a large game file.
Though it would be very easy to consider WarStory as just another strategy game, doing so would be an unforgivable mistake. You can see the quality difference yourself in the first 5 minutes of play; the user interface is clean and uncluttered, tooltips help to identify the various buttons on the screen ensuring that if you find yourself confused, you won’t stay that way for long. But it’s the battles that detail this quality level most obviously.
And you’ll get a taste of these battles right from the beginning. The tutorial in WarStory is admittedly quite complicated, and that’s also part of the entire game’s charm: WarStory is complex. It’s this complexity that makes it so good. The battle phases in WarStory require that you choose your units, upgrade your units, upgrade your commanding officers, and control your units individually during battle to capture territory (which unlocks special abilities) and to attack enemy units. It’s complicated. It’s complex. That’s why it’s fun.
Of course, during the tutorial, you won’t need to make these kinds of decisions. Instead, you’ll click a single button, and the game will automatically choose the best unit composition for the battle you’re about to begin. I love this system. It makes it easy for me to learn how to play, without limiting me further down the line. As I get better, as I learn more, as my army grows, I can begin to take more responsibility and in turn, I can have a lot more fun.
After completing the tutorial it’s very easy to feel a little lost. You’ll have learned how to move from city to city, and how to battle any enemies that you might find along the way, but until you get the hang of the basic mechanics of play, you’re going to need some direction. Fortunately, you’ll have just that. Your scouts, which you can access in your navigation menu on the left side of the screen, will find missions for you to complete, and in doing so, you’ll earn experience that can be used to upgrade your troops and commanders, and gold which you can spend on increasing the size and strength of your army.
It won’t take very long before you get a flow for how WarStory operates, and it’s then that you’ll begin to see it for its true potential. Each server in WarStory is one ‘game’, and like all good games, it will eventually end. If your side can gain control of the map and the cities within it, eventually your side will win. Your goal is to help make that happen, and thanks to the global leaderboard, when you do, you’ll be recognized for it. And receive all the rewards therein.
It would be impossible for me to talk about all of the features in WarStory here today. It’s a big, complex game, that when played to its full potential, is vastly more rewarding than most others of its kind. Try it yourself; you can play it right now, in less than a minute.
