Wizard 101 is a family-oriented Fantasy MMORPG that puts you in the shoes of a newly enrolled magic student at the Ravenwood Academy. Everyone at some point has wanted to become a student of magic ever since the discovery of Harry Potter and Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry; Wizard 101 puts a heavy emphasis on making you feel like an actual magic student from the very moment they step into Ravenwood Academy.

Like traditional trading card games such as Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering, the gameplay of Wizard 101 revolves around players collecting spellcards which they can use to customise their deck. The deck is used to pass wizarding exams, battle monsters and duel other wizards. The animation sequences and charming graphics for the summoning spells are highly polished and give the battles and duels an authentic sense of energy.

You can choose one of nine magic schools to study under, as well as taking up a secondary class for access to additional spells. Each school of magic has its own Professor, who personally teaches each wizard about their chosen school of magic.

Wizard 101 also offers a range of high quality minigames that reward players with gold and prizes. These minigames are used to recover mana quickly and serve as a great way to relax. Aside from the minigames there are various ways to spend time at Ravenwood Academy including trainable pets, costume customisation, gardening and the ability to decorate your own room with anything from candles, banners or even towering statues of unicorns.

Players also have access to various different mounts to help get around. You can choose to fly around on a broom, a dragon or a horse among other. Similarly to Aion, the player can also obtain a pair of wings to fly around with.

Wizard 101 is very family and child friendly. Parents have easy access to permission settings which, unlike other internet games like World of Warcraft, allows complete control over what their child experiences at Ravenwood. With just a few clicks it’s possible to completely remove any chance that the player will encounter anything indecent (even from other players) without restricting access to the game itself. The game’s developer, KingsIsle, even provides support for Wizard 101 childrens parties through their website!

All of the non-player characters are voiced and the quality of the voice acting is terrific. The numerous quests and stories the player is a part of greatly adds to the sense of being a student at the Academy. 

The game does tend to move a bit slow in places, especially at the beginning, but it is understandable due to its ability to cater for all ages. Additionally, the true depth and strategy available through duelling isn’t readily apparent until much higher levels.

Wizard 101 has an outstanding and friendly community and support team and, alongside the Free-to-Play content, has subscription or pay as you go (AKA Freemium) options as well, which can open up additional content only as you want it.
