Man Vs Machine Broke The FPS World Record

posted by: Daniel Owens Tue 31st Jan 2012

MuchDifferent announced recently that they were going to attempt to break the world record for most players in a single battle simultaneously. They developed an FPS that would only be played once, for the world record attempt and used their new PikkoServer technology to make it possible. The Swedish non-profit organization has announced that they managed to pull it off, along with 999 players from across the globe. MuchDifferent was only one player short of their initial goal of 1000, the biggest battle that has ever taken place in an FPS.

“Obviously, this would not have been possible without the players, so I’d like to send a special warm and loving “thank you” to them! Thank you for bringing such creativity to both the battlefield and to the chat. You had me laughing, giggling and spilling coffee throughout the event!” (Christian Lönnholm, MuchDifferent CEO).

This feat really is a step forward for the industry, this technology has many applications to MMOs and other online games. Utilizing the PikkoServer technology, developers can run their online games across multiple servers using this technology. PikkoServer balances the load across the servers and essentially stitches them together for the player on the other end. This means MMOs can hold more people and create larger open worlds without the restraint of server load. It was only inevitable that this would become easier to do, but we're glad it's happening now.
