YouPorn eSports Team Banned from ESL

The YouPorn eSports team, Team YP, has been banned from the Electronic Sports League due to a rule prohibiting certain types of sponsors. Team YP is sponsored by the well known adult oriented website YouPorn, and this relationship is in violation of an ESL rule that prohibits sponsorship from entities “…widely known for pornographic… or other adult/mature themes and products.”

Team YP was initially informed of the ESL rule and decision to remove them in an email, and they responded by making “…several appeals to ESL and even offered to rebrand in a way that did not refer to YouPorn or even “YP” in any way,” but the appeals were initially met with no success. ESL released a statement in response, saying “Advertising pornography is not legal in the markets we operate in, and the vast majority of partners we’re working with have strict “no drugs, no alcohol, no pornography” rules… these aren’t new rules but ones that have been in our rulebooks for a long time.”

ESL has stated that they are not trying to cut ties with Team YP themselves, as much as simply adhere to the rules and to appease their partners. ESL has also stated that they are still looking for ways to reinstate the team, but in an earlier email conversation between ESL and Team YP, ESL stated that their lawyers could find “…no way to change the policy for the time being.”

This is a developing story, and this post will be updated with new information as it becomes available.

Our Thoughts:

ESL works with some huge corporate sponsors, and they have to tiptoe the conservative minefield of corporate politics mixed with political correctness, with a dash of broadcaster restrictions and regulations mixed in. However, eSports games themselves are largely replete with violence – some of which is extremely graphic – as well as strong language, sexually suggestive themes and characters, and other themes aimed at a mature audience… why does the fact a team’s shirt says “YP” override the content of the games being played in importance?
