War of Legends is a browser based MMORTS from the makers of Runescape that allows you to take control of your empire in a persistent world and out-build, out-govern and out-last your enemies to control the largest territory in the land.

Players can recruit armies, grow their cities and attract heroes to their cause, or form alliances and treaties to maintain peace in their own lands. War of Legends also features a number of different unit selections, including Archers, Charioteers, Halberdiers and Swordsmen.

Review

War of Legends is an historical Chinese influenced MMORTS, similar to Evony and Kingory, and played entirely from your browser window.  Because War of Legends was published by the makers of Runescape, anyone who has an existing Runescape account can immediately log in using that. Even without an existing account, registration only takes a matter of seconds.

As with most MMORTS games, reaching your goals requires good management of recources, strategic planning and the ability to lead an army. Whether your goal is to conquer the world or simply grow your empire peacefully is up to you.

War of Legends has an incredible art style with a distinctive Chinese-warlord theme as well as wonderfully detailed graphics and smooth animation. The user-interface is highly intuitive and very easy to use; most of the relevant areas will be intelligently highlighted for you when you need them.
What sets War of Legends apart from the pack is its simplified units system. War of Legends has four types of infantry (Archers, Charioteers, Halberdiers and Swordsmen) that all have their own strengths and weaknesses. This seeming lack of diversity in the units puts more emphasis on battle strategy and resource management, which rewards the players who put in more thought rather than pump out the most soldiers.

Although the battle system might seem simple, the range of buildings and research opportunities available rivals even the heavy hitters like Sid Meier’s Civilization. Combined with the five types of resources, War of Legends has clearly been designed to reward those who put in the effort and forethought and punish the wasteful.

War of Legends offers a 7-day practice period for new players, giving you time to build your city up before being launched into the world at large. With a large range of detailed in-game tutorials, walkthroughs and early rewards, War of Legends is fun and easy to begin but a true challenge to master.

Of special note is the hero system in which players attract heroes that travel the world. The heroes in War of Legends are persistent as well; you might just find yourself attracting heroes from rival empires and hiring them to fight for you or even govern one of your cities!

The empire you build in War of Legends is highly customizable. As the leader of your kingdom you can name each of your cities, appoint governors, set tax rates and even personally help keep your populace happy. Of course, you don’t need to stop with your own city. Opening up diplomatic relations between empires is encouraged through the use of alliances. New players can use an alliance to help keep their city safe and get quick and easy advice from other players or join forces to heroically overthrow an oppressive tyrant.

Your empire will continue to thrive even while you’re not online, making it perfect for casual players who have might only have a few minutes to spare and dedicated players who want to spend hours planning, managing, scheming and conquering.
