For many DC fans, the Flashpoint story arc is an all-time favourite. Spoiler warning if you’re unfamiliar with the 2011 series and wish to wait for the inevitable DCEU rendition. The tale tells of an alternate timeline in which Barry Allen (The Flash) stumbles into an alternate reality. In said reality, The Flash no longer has powers, Batman is a killer (and also Thomas Wayne), and the Atlanteans and Amazons are embroiled in a conflict that has effectively steamrolled the whole of Western Europe. You know, predictably dark DC stuff.
Well now DC Universe Online is boldly incorporating this reality-bending arc into their own DC-sphere. Entitled World of Flashpoint, the DC MMO is aiming to integrate major plot-points from the main story whilst keeping players anchored in their own timeline. These will include Thomas Wayne as Batman out for lethal vengeance following the death of his son Bruce, and Emperor Aquaman facing off against Queen Diana (AKA Wonder Woman) as players are tasked with undoing this critical paradox. Of course, Flashpoint-specific locations such as Nightmare Central City will also be included.
During the event, standard and elite versions of all On Duty content will be available alongside level-agnostic event versions for a limited time. This content will include open-world missions in addition to a Duo, an Alert and two Raids. Plus, heroes can enjoy new player rewards, including gear, styles, base items, and feats.
DCUO Lead Content Designer, Rob Frazier, had this to say about the upcoming update: ‘We’ve been leading up to the World of Flashpoint for some time now, starting back in Wonderverse, and finally the pay off is here. I love how the episode spans the globe, bringing several stories from the comics together in new ways. That varied approach makes the whole feel bigger with higher stakes.’
World of Flashpoint is currently scheduled to land this April, so there’s plenty of time for heroes to get their affairs in order before the world as they know it is torn asunder. In the meantime, check out the official press release for all the details.
