The new year is in full swing (yes it really is four days in) and already the Final Fantasy community is abuzz. And it’s not so much with excitement following Yoshi-P’s tease for the future of FFXIV post-Endwalker. But more with widespread disgruntlement following the Square Enix president’s implication that Final Fantasy NFTs are in the pipeline.

Final Fantasy NFTs

Final Fantasy NFTs

In an open letter penned on 1st January, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda expressed his enthusiasm for NFTs. While stopping short of confirming that Final Fantasy NFTs are going to be a thing, Matsuda did write that Square Enix “will keep a close eye on societal shifts in this space while listening to the many groups of users that populate it, and ramp up our efforts to develop a business accordingly, with an eye to potentially issuing our own tokens in the future.”

To say that the suggestion has fallen flat is putting it mildly. The FFXIV community alone have reacted with widespread concern that NFTs will assume the role of Eorzea’s next big invader. Though many are optimistic that FFXIV Director/Producer/Saviour Naoki Yoshida (A.K.A. Yoshi-P) will hold the line, and Square Enix will instead attach NFTs to a brand new project.

The Future of FFXIV

Speaking of the future of FFXIV, Yoshi-P penned a New Years letter of his own over the weekend. While the letter was scant on details, it was rife with characteristically comforting content, including a gazillionth apology for the Endwalker delay and server issues.

But it mostly assures us that FFXIV isn’t done yet. It states that while Yoshi-P has been working on it for twelve years, there’s still a lot more he’d like to achieve with FFXIV. Let’s just hope it doesn't include NFTs.
