#3 Harvesting
All the trading skills in New World have some appeal. Heck, even boring old tree cutting finds the occasional bit of sap or a glowing blue Wyrdwood tree to chop at. But for the first time in our knowledge, an MMORPG has managed to make harvesting exciting, and that deserves some credit. Whether you’re using your trusty sickle to steal crops from Moe’s Farm or just collecting rare and wild ingredients such as Fronded Pettlecaps (it’s a mushroom), Amazon Games’ developers have successfully turned the least boring skill in most games to a positively delightful pastime. Credit where credit is due. Heck, even “Rivercress” looks like glowing bubble-gum structures.
#2 Fishing
The fishing mechanic in New World is simple enough. Find a fishing spot, choose an appropriate bait, cast at your optimal distance, wait for a bite. Once you’ve caught your fish (or other) you reel it in, making sure you the line doesn’t break through a surplus or deficit of tension. Yet as well as the joys of finding a fishing hotspot and/or gathering your own bait, there is great tranquil joy in New World fishing. Be it from the salvageable parts to collect (leather boots, anchors, frogfish, snails, and even a rare treasure chest) or the joy of catching a record breaking whopper of a trout. Sure the armoursmiths have the exhilarating chance of creating rare platemail armour that drastically boosts your stats, but that's nothing compared to the thrill of hooking a healthy bass.
#1 Cooking
Yep, you read that right. Sure, we could have chosen the Azoth using weaponsmithing with its chance for awesome perks and invaluable gem-slots. Sure, we could have chosen Engineering for the joy of a successful use of Sparkmetal in the creation of the finest musket in the New World. But no, we’re taking the peaceful route and eating a slice of humble pie, and a delicious one at that. Cooking in New World is calming, accessible, and has a huge variety of meals (which genuinely sound tasty). The perks of these meals are authentically useful too. And collecting different ingredients encourages you to travel through the different realms of Aeternum. Moreover, while you may only need a new flaming greataxe every few levels, having a skilled cook in your party will always prove useful, so you just know you’ll be appreciated.
