For six years the Game Devs of Color Expo has been held to shine a light on game creators and contributors that can otherwise find themselves pushed to the margins of the industry. Started in 2016, each year has seen the expo grow in size with last year’s virtual rendition drawing in over 1,500 viewers. Now, hoping to grow that number further, submissions are open to speakers, table-top game designers and video-game developers that are interested in participating.

The GDoCExpo is typically held at the Schomburg Center in Harlem, New York. However, due to a certain pandemic last year’s event took to the internet with a show that included developer talks, interviews, and panels. While attendees missed out on the in-person privilege of playing some exciting upcoming titles, the event instead held a digital direct showcase and a corresponding Steam event.

While this year’s event is also set to take place online (which is unfortunately likely to mean no hands-on previews), there is an opportunity for game developers to apply for a grant which last year totalled an impressive $90k. Whether or not applicants receive the grant, however, the chance to showcase their game in front of thousands of eyes is a welcome opportunity.

Applications to speak at the event are open with all speakers being paid for their efforts and extra exposure offered as the Game Devs of Color Expo will publish speakers’ presentations via their own YouTube channel after the main event.

The event welcomes participants of all genders, races, abilities, sexual orientations, and religions. So if you, or someone you know, could benefit from this intersectional and equitable effort to build access to knowledge, funding, and opportunities, then check out the speaker submissions and game submissions pages for a chance to get involved.
