It feels as though extreme sports MMO Riders Republic has arrived quicker than a rocket-propelled wingsuit. The latest offering from Ubisoft has finally landed following regular play tests. And judging by the general response of those that have played already - it’s looking like a smooth landing.
For the last week, Riders Republic was available to play for free for four hours. During that time, players have been participating en masse in various extreme sports and loving it. Aside from its no-holds-barred, high-octane premise of speeding down a mountain through whichever death defying means one desires, there’s fun to be had in such a way that only an MMO setting can provide.
Whatever your stance on sports games, it’s probably safe to say that if you love the jellybean-themed chaos that is Fall Guys, then Riders Republic will probably be up your mountain valley. The simple goal of reaching the finish line first pales in comparison to the fun that can be had along the way.
Mountain bikers in garish getups jostling for a narrow strip of track only to decide mid-jump that they’d rather wingsuit the rest of the way down is exactly the type of radical dream fulfilment that video games were created for. And when a competitive game can turn losing into something that’s just as, if not more, fun as clinching victory in a 50 player-strong race, we’d call that a winning formula.
Given that Riders Republic has only just hit the slopes, however, time will tell whether the adrenaline will fade. But provided Ubisoft can keep things fresh in the coming months, then we’d say that this unique extreme sports MMO is worth keeping an eye on.
