Yoshi-P's Public Crackdown on FFXIV Mods

Written by Ollie Bradley at 05/15/2022, 03:40 AM

Three new Tier 6 starships have just been announced for Star Trek Online, and each will come equipped with the Supplemental Subsystems universal console.

The first new starship is the Yamato Class Dreadnought Cruiser, which is an enhanced version of the Tier 5 Galaxy Dreadnought. The second is the Kolasi Siege Destroyer, an upgraded version of the Tier 5 Guramba Siege Destroyer, and it will be available at the Lieutenant General Rank. Finally, the Kara Advanced Warbird is an improved Ha’apax Advanced Warbird and will be available to Vice Admiral Romulan captains. Each of these ships has received the 2410 visual update.

Star Trek Online

In addition to the base ship, each Tier 6 starship comes equipped with the Supplemental Subsystems universal console. This will provide a temporary boost to your starship’s maximum subsystem power levels when activated. Furthermore, incoming energy weapon attacks damage the attacker and a minor portion of the attacker’s subsystem power is leeched back to you. Finally, players will gain a Subsystem Overload Counter whenever hit with an energy attack and after obtaining 20 counters a devastating pulse of energy is emitted.

The Supplemental Subsystems universal console can only be equipped on Starfleet Dreadnought Cruisers, Advanced Warbirds or Siege Destroyers in any console slot. Additionally, the console provides a passive bonus to all subsystem power levels.

Not only do these new starships come with powerful consoles, but each has special abilities:

Yamato Class Dreadnought Cruiser [T6]

  • 1x Hangar Bay

  • Can use the Console – Universal – Saucer Separation

    • Found on the Exploration Cruiser Retrofit
  • Built in Phaser Spinal Lance ability

Kolasi Siege Destroyer [T6]

  • 1x Hangar Bay

  • Built in Siege Mode ability

    • Allows usage of the Javelin ability

Kara Advanced Warbird [T6]

  • 1x Hangar Bay

  • Can use the Console – Universal – Dual Vector Separation

    • Found on the Haakona Advanced Warbird
  • Built in Plasma Spinal Lance

FFXIV Mods Crackdown 2.jpg

Yoshi-P is on a warpath. The famously affable Final Fantasy XIV Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida has recently been spearheading a crackdown on impish in-game behaviour. And it's evoking widespread feelings of sheepishness akin to when the 'cool' teacher at high school finally starts dishing out detentions because they've had enough of your collective crap.

FFXIV Mods Crackdown 1.jpg

Most recently, this crackdown has manifested in a public slap on the wrist for players in breach of the 'no third-party tools' rule in FFXIV's terms of service. This incorporates a wide variety of popular mods that range from minimal UI improvements to ones that offer a downright unfair advantage to advanced players.

For the most part, however, advanced players make use of UI mods that help them track damage output and the mechanics of a raid. Use of these minimal FFXIV mods has been widely tolerated. Until now.

A sternly worded letter from Yoshi-P himself was prompted by the recent spate of players completing the difficult Dragonsong's Reprise (Ultimate) raid who have obviously been using some third-party tools despite the TOS. And while Yoshi-P requests that the letter be read in its entirety so as not to be misrepresented, the general gist is this: all third-party tools are banned and those in breach of the rules will meet suspensions and bans. So stop it, you guys.

This warning was recently authenticated as two streamers found themselves put in literal (in-game) jail for their use of mods during a raid. This very public show of enforcement saw Hiroro and Bagel Goose being transported from the action to Mordion Gaol, where a mod then materialises in order to deal with the accused. From this point, mods will have a conversation to establish the nature of the punishment, such as a temporary or permanent ban.

Suffice to say, the FFXIV playerbase is somewhat shaken. The message in Yoshida's letter seems clear enough: if in doubt, use no mods at all. But there are still some that believe minimal FFXIV mods are permissible. However, if these public shows of force demonstrate anything to us, it's probably best to not risk it.
