Fans are speculating that D&D legend Matt Mercer will star in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Critical Role Fans Rejoice Over Surprise Matt Mercer Nintendo Direct Role
A surprise Nintendo Direct dropped yesterday, and graced Nintendo Switch owners with a smorgasbord of trailers and announcements. Among them was a highly anticipated second official trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. And with it came a deluge of speculation that Dungeons and Dragons don, Matt Mercer, is lending his versatile vocal chords to the project.
Though Mr. Mercer has yet to confirm it himself, the 'die' is already cast.
The Tears of the Kingdom trailer was more than enough to excite the droves of Zelda fans that dominate the gaming sphere. The distinctive BotW artstyle makes a triumphant return to Hyrule, which is replete with yet more puzzles and modes of transport for the series' beloved hero, Link, to enjoy. But another subset of the internet's supernerd community were similarly stoked when antagonistic mainstay, Ganon, began speaking.
Though everybody's favorite dungeon master, Matt Mercer, is known for being a vocal chameleon, it seems that years of cultivating a zealous fanbase has led to Critical Role fans (known as Critters) being able to identify his voice anywhere. And though Mr. Mercer has yet to confirm it himself, the die is already cast.
Part of the excitement from Twitter's Critters stems (aside from Matt Mercer just doing his job as a professional voice actor) from the fact that this isn't Mr. Mercer's first stint as the red-haired rogue. In fact, he made an in-person appearance as Ganondorf in the popular independent series There Will Be Brawl - a Smash Bros' parody film with a distinctly grittier spin than the famously family-friendly Nintendo would ever condone.
For non-Critters, however, there was plenty of other Nintendo goodness to indulge in, including the long-awaited reboots of Metroid Prime and Advance Wars 1 & 2, Pikmin 4, and Splatoon 3. Plus, fans will finally be able to access GameBoy and GameBoy Advance titles with a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
