More information on the new Minecraft RTS has emerged - and we’re pretty stoked.
Minecraft Legends - Everything We Know About the New Minecraft RTS Game
A new Minecraft RTS game (Real Time Strategy) is just around the corner, becoming the first Minecraft spinoff since Minecraft Dungeons to take the IP in a new direction. And from what we've seen so far, it's the right one, as Minecraft Legends deftly treads the line between classic Minecraft and something entirely new. Here's everything we know about it so far...
It will be multiplayer
We got a deeper look at Minecraft Legends at Minecraft Live 2022, including some of the gameplay. Thankfully, but somewhat unsurprisingly for an RTS, we will be able to play along with up to four friends in co-op mode as players must engage in solid teamwork to overcome the Piglin threat. Although there doesn't seem to be any sign of a PvP mode yet.
The gameplay is story-focussed
The new Minecraft RTS is set to follow a pretty fleshed-out story. In it, players must stave off a burgeoning Piglin threat as they and their portals begin to spread corruption around the world. New friends in the form of Foresight, Knowledge, and Action - the three primary tools wielded by all Minecraft players - will help guide you on your way as you go about saving the world.
New & old mechanics
The act of harvesting resources and using them to build things is one of the features that makes Minecraft so perfect for an RTS makeover. However, unlike many other RTS games, Mojang was keen to keep a 'hero' character at the centre of the story. Meaning that instead of being a disembodied commander issuing orders from the sky, players will instead assume control of their very own hero astride a mighty, customizable steed.
From there, players will command Allays to harvest and build while mobs that will include friendly Creepers among other, brand-new creatures, can be rallied and ordered into battle. The whole set-up looks to be particularly controller-friendly, with Mojang describing the title as 'action strategy' for its fast-paced mechanics.
There's not long to wait
The team confirmed that Minecraft Legends will release in the Spring of 2023, which isn't surprising, as the gameplay footage looked pretty polished. Until then, we'd say it's pretty safe to get your hopes up.
