Thanks in no small part to a very tall lady, vampires are once again the talk of the village. The scions of darkness have appealed to the angsty goth within us all for years. And their legacy in pop culture, much like themselves, is seemingly indestructible. But there are all too few MMO games that allow us to carry out lives in undeath, which is why our next Indie Spotlight title, V Rising, is so exciting. Particularly if you’re a Castlevania fan.

V Rising is the next offering from Stunlock Studios, the team behind arena brawler Battlerite. Although, this foray into dark fantasy is a stark departure from their previous title. The open world survival game sees players assume control of a weakened vampire awakened from centuries of slumber, only to be faced with a hostile and unforgiving world. Unsurprisingly, players must drink the blood of human victims to survive and recover the strength needed to establish their very own dark empire.

Explore the shadowy open world alone or with a clan of friends and either prey on or seduce humans into your service as vampiric thralls. Much like other survival games, players can build their own base - specifically, castles - to operate from as you engage in both PvP and PvE elements.

Perils in the form of fellow players and hostile AI are one thing, but much like the innovative mechanics we’ve highlighted in exciting upcoming MMO Pantheon - the environment itself can be just as dangerous. As you avoid vampire hunters and other nasties, just be sure not to run headfirst into a ray of sunlight. Lest you fall foul of a particularly lethal sunburn.

“The team took inspiration from everything from classic gothic horror literature to Netflix’s Castlevania to create a world of conflict where vampires, humans, and mythical beasts co-exist in a delicate balance. We want to give players the full vampire experience of avoiding the burning sunlight, hunting for blood and building their castle. All this while competing against other players and being tracked by vampire hunters. This is our most ambitious game yet, and we can’t wait to reveal more information in the foreseeable future,” said Johan Ilves, Marketing Director at Stunlock Studios.

The V Rising beta is set for release later this year, so there’s not long to wait before you can slake your taste for blood. To embrace the oncoming darkness, sign up for the V Rising beta by heading to the official website.
