The news that Blizzard has introduced a World of Warcraft Community Council is amazing for many reasons. For one, it means that Blizzard has taken what can be seen as the ultimate step in finally listening to its playerbase. But that pales in comparison to the immense bragging rights that participants will receive from being a part of ‘The Council’. Let’s just hope they can all settle on a transmog uniform.

The World of Warcraft Community Council is the latest effort by a beleaguered Blizzard to tie itself back together. And for all their efforts thus far, we’d call this one a masterstroke.

This year began with a frustrated player base clamouring for swift and myriad changes to Shadowlands and beyond, culminating in an exodus that was only spurred by the company’s apparent refusal to listen. Oh, and the ensuing lawsuits and IRL staff walk-outs.

Now, as the year draws to a close, Blizzard’s wide-open arms are a beautiful sight. Whether forced or otherwise.

The World of Warcraft Community Council will function as a discussion forum that will comprise successful Council applicants, but will be publicly visible to all. Council members will also be able to communicate privately. And live chats between Council members and the WoW devs also may be par for the course.

“One of the key goals with this program is to encourage discussion with players from a wide variety of different playstyles. To help ensure this, part of the application process will involve sharing your areas of interest and expertise,” said Blizzard in its official announcement post.

“Whether it’s cutting-edge raiding, playing alts, completing achievements, accessibility, or collecting transmog, we want to know your perspective and ensure you’re heard.”

Council members will also have terms, with brand new applicants being drafted on an annual basis to ensure as many fresh perspectives are being heard as possible.

Is there room for things to go awry? It’s a Council, of course there is. But the take-home is that Blizzard can’t really do better when it comes to listening to fan feedback. Well, apart from, you know...acting on it.

Either way, if you think you have what it takes to sit on The Council - be sure to apply post-haste.
