With high-res graphics continuing to blur the line between real life and our favourite fantasy lands, it can be easy to forget the origins of gaming as we know it. But whether it's D&D or Settlers of Catan, our next Indie Spotlight recipient is a tribute to those tabletop roots, as well as a testament to what a small dev team can achieve with enough passion for the genre.
Mist Legacy is an indie fantasy MMORPG from Virtys, a Quebec-based studio with a penchant for tabletop gaming. Their debut title, Therian Saga, was first launched in 2013 and has enjoyed positive reviews from its fanbase ever since. And there's every reason to believe that their second venture will be just as compelling.
Mist Legacy Key Features
Mist Legacy is a 2D top-down MMORPG that evokes the style of a board game as it capably carries out the mechanics that keep us logging in day after day. Instead of running around the fantasy setting with an animated avatar, players instead control an icon akin to a board game counter with an emphasis on planning their routes carefully as they embark on their latest quest.
Goodbye class system, the skill-based progression system has players hone the skills that they wish to define their playthrough, with crafting and skilling taking centre stage. Avatars will reflect the gear that they wear, which can be crafted from scratch by harvesting and battling for the necessary materials.
Exploring every corner of the world of Myriaden will require preparation, as different biomes require a particular set of skills to explore. After all, it may be easy to scrabble one's way up the highest peak in a regular RPG, but nobody stands a chance of climbing Everest without the proper training beforehand.
Combat is turn-based, with the ability to rally friends or NPCs in the heat of battle. Weaknesses and exploits both play a role, while five combat specialisations can be combined in thousands of ways - adding a layer of strategy to every bout.
Finally, it goes without saying that the story itself is worth sacrificing flashy graphics for, with a storybook feel designed to keep players engrossed in a fantasy narrative replete with colourful characters and myriad twists and turns.
When Can We Play?
Mist Legacy is available to play in early access as of right now. Then again, there isn't long to wait until the September 13th 2022 release date.
