As we anticipate the release of one ‘hardcore’ MMORPG in Mortal Online 2, we figured now might be a good time to turn the Indie Spotlight on another hardcore endeavour: Valorbound. Though we don’t expect its release any time soon, any adventurer worth their salt should always look to see what other challenges lie on the horizon, after all.

Valorbound is an in-development effort from Team Scionica to deliver a challenging MMORPG complete with horizontal progression in a PvEvP environment. Team Scionica are the ones to thank for Faerun Heroes, an MMORPG made in Minecraft. And it looks like their ambitions have grown into something pretty exciting.

Valorbound Key Features

Valorbound adopts a ‘mid fantasy’ setting. Which means that while players can expect some familiar fantasy tropes - i.e. goblins and swords and magic - the story does not revolve around the chosen one seeking to fell a tyrannical dragon. Instead, players are but a cog in the machine that is the Adventurers Guild, tasked with securing loot for the benefit of your town.

Horizontal progression does away with a preoccupation with levelling stats. Instead, a players’ outfit and skills are front-and-centre, meaning any enemy can pose just as much of a problem after hours of gameplay if one isn’t dressed accordingly.

This also means that every player is more or less on a level playing field, regardless of when they jump into the game. Because the full-loot system allows for every player to pull from the same pool of loot, regardless of experience.

Several races and myriad classes are rendered in stylised graphics powered by Unity Engine. Though there’s plenty of room for the look to change. Especially if their recently showcased volumetric lighting is anything to go by.

When Can We Play?

Details are scant on a release date as yet, with the team themselves stating “we're not a, "make a date, then push it out anyways, regardless of quality" kind of team.” But their roadmap offers a handy way to keep track on the title’s progress. As does their Twitter account.

For now, however, if the project piques your interest, we’d encourage interested parties to sign up for the Early Access and join the Team Scionica Discord as we await further developments.
