SWTOR Offers Unstable Arbiter’s Lightsaber for Direct Sale

Those who have tried getting a rare item out of an SWTOR lockbox would probably prefer to buy said item directly instead. The devs of the MMO are testing those waters as they have elected to put the Unstable Arbiter’s Lightsaber, a platinum rarity item, up for purchase.

The saber in question will set you back 7,600 Cartel Coins, the equivalent of approximately $60 according to prices of Cartel Coins on the game’s official store.

According to the announcement, the cost of the item comes as a result of the team trying to toe the line between offering more purchasing options while not devaluing platinum rarity Cartel items. “We may discover that direct selling Platinum items erodes their value, and that will have an impact on how we handle these sales in the future,” reads the post. “Basically, this is a test and we wanted you to be aware of what we are doing and why.”

Should the test in question be reasonably well-received, plans will be made to offer other platinum rarity items for direct purchase, though the sale of those items wouldn’t come until “a number of months” later in order to maintain the item’s rarity.

Our Thoughts

That is a LOT to be asking for a single cosmetic item. Then again, there are people out there who would be willing to drop that much on a digital item if they want their character to have a certain appearance. We’re not so sure this move will be a good one, as the devs now run the risk of either angering people who believe this is price gouging, angering those who don’t want their rare drop to become common, or angering both parties at once.

Your Thoughts

So where do you stand on the Unstable Arbiter’s Lightsaber sale? Would you be willing to pay that much for a cosmetic item, or do you think it’s a terrible idea? How much have you personally spent to dress up your MMO avatar? Let us know below.
