Job one for tankers in any MMORPG is to hope the kittens of your PUG stay corralled long enough to see a dungeon clear, and the first way to do that is by generating threat. According to some current Battle for Azeroth tank metrics, however, that kitten corralling might become a little more challenging as threat generation is being adjusted…or at least require a bit more forethought
According to current data gathered by Wowhead, tanks generate four times more threat than DPS classes, which is a drop-off of about 80% compared to Legion’s current numbers where tanks generate 14 and 20 times more threat than DPS.
With that said, it appears that Taunt will still carry over the 5x multiplier for threat gains as it currently does in Legion. Additionally, abilities with High Threat will increase the threat gained by another four times. Essentially, players who main tanks currently in WoW will likely need to prioritize Taunts and High Threat skills if they’re not somehow doing so already.
It’s also important to note that this information does appear to be gained from a current test build of Battle for Azeroth, which means that any of these numbers could be changed between now and the expansion’s release, so there’s lots of time for tweaking before August arrives.
So yeah, doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a terribly huge deal overall. This assumes, of course, that tank players in Warcraft were already making sure abilities that herd mobs together and keep them bundled up were already spamming their taunt and threat moves…so if you’re not doing so, you probably will want to get that muscle memory sorted out sooner rather than later.
