Blizzard is officially all in on esports. The company has confirmed the opening of a Blizzard esports arena where it looks to draw in esports pros and fans while also confirming a series of events that are scheduled to emanate from the venue.
The new venue, known as the Blizzard Arena, is situated in Burbank Studios in Los Angeles, California, taking over the former television studio and transforming it into what it describes as “an exciting live-event experience for local attendees and broadcast audiences around the world”.
The Blizzard Arena has been purpose-built to host esports events year-round with multiple sound stages, control rooms, and practice facilities along with an on-site Blizzard retail store that will feature rotating stock for visiting fans.
The Arena has already lined up several of its largest Blizzard competitions to be housed at the venue, including the Overwatch Contenders Season One Playoffs on October 7th and 8th, the Hearthstone Championship Tour’s Summer Championship on October 13th, and the Heroes of the Storm Global Championship and World of Warcraft Arena Championship in late October.
Blizzard Arena will officially open its doors to the public on October 7th for the Overwatch Contenders event. Tickets are available for both the Overwatch Contenders Playoffs and the HCT Summer Championship.
Clearly, Blizzard is deadly serious about making esports a major part of its franchises. We’re both surprised and impressed by the reveal of the Blizzard Arena and are looking forward to seeing how this all-esports venue will do and whether it will convince others to build similar venues.
