Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns Unleashes The Tempest

“O, brave new world that has such people in’t!”

A few days ago Arenanet teased the next specialization from Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. With both of the other light classes already seen to, that meant it was the turn of the Elementalist.

Today Ten Ton Hammer has an exclusive reveal on the Tempest ahead of the Guild Wars 2 livestream at the end of this week. Be sure to check in to Points Of Interest this Friday to see the Tempest in action.

So what do we know? The core mechanic for the Tempest allows people with this specialization to overload their elemental attunements for massive effects.
Developer Karl McLain is quoted on Ten Ton Hammer as saying that “these abilities are so chaotic and draining that they exhaust your current attunement, locking you out of it for a period of time should you move to another element.”

“At this hour Lie at my mercy all mine enemies.”

Naturally there are four overload abilities conforming to the four attunements on offer to Elementalists already.

  • Overload Fire: Build up a fire tornado that damages foes and grants allies might before leaving it somewhere to whirl and burn.
  • Overload Water: Gather up a bubble of water that will grant regen and cleanse allies before popping for a large area heal.
  • Overload Air: Create a cloud that will repeatedly zap nearby enemies before being left in position as a lightning field.
  • Overload Earth: Ride a wave of earth granting protection to nearby allies and crippling enemies before finishing in a blast that immobilizes foes.

Apart from the new class mechanics, there is of course the new weapon. Elementalists can look forward to the off hand Warhorn for the Tempest. Between the new weapon skills and the class mechanices, Elementalist players can also look forward to a set of shouts. It’s not just Warriors and Guardians who get to make noise any more.

“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.”

About Jonathan Doyle

Once long ago Westwood made a space game. Earth And Beyond was the start of the journey. From there, through Paragon City and to the fields of Altdorf, there were battles. Westwood brought me to MMOs. City of Heroes refined my love for them. Warhammer brought me to writing about them. He loves all things space, sci fi, Warhammer or heroic.
