World of Warcraft Players Raise $1.7 Million for Charity

Last winter, Blizzard Entertainment announced that 100% of the proceeds from World of Warcraft Brightpaw pet purchases would go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. As of February 11, contributions from World of Warcraft players have reached $1.7 million.

It’s not uncommon to see MMORPG communities band together for a good cause, but the stakes have just been raised by the World of Warcraft community. More than 170,000 Brightpaw pets were sold at $10 apiece to raise $1.7 million for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which helps grant wishes to children around the world with life-threatening medical conditions.

World of Warcraft players looking to get their hands on the Brightpaw pet can still do so through the Battle.net store, however, the charity donation period has ended.

Our Thoughts:

Regardless of the bad reputation that World of Warcraft and its player base might have acquired over the years, it’s amazing to see how many people were willing to donate for an excellent cause. The Make-A-Wish foundation might not be able to cure life-threatening childhood illnesses, but it does bring joy to these children that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. And sometimes that’s just enough to help them through those tough times in their lives.
